Etymology: < Anglo-Norman and Middle French perseverant (12th cent. in Old French; French persévérant ), present participle of persévérer persevere v. Compare classical Latin persevērant- , persēverāns steadfast, persistent, person who is constant, uses as adjective and noun of present participle of persevērāre persevere v.The β. forms show Older Scots alteration of the ending after -and suffix1. The word was formerly pronounced with stress on the second syllable: see note at persevere v.
