Etymology: Partly < Spanish persiana silk stuff (1676), venetian blind (1737), use as noun of feminine of persiano Persian adj., and partly < Italian persiana silk stuff (1765), venetian blind (1771), use as noun of feminine of persiano Persian adj., both perhaps after French persienne persienne n. (although this is first attested later than the Spanish). With sense 2 compare earlier persienne n.
1. A dress material printed with Persian pattern (Persian pattern n. at Persian n. and adj. Compounds 1b). Now rare.
