Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin Persicus.
Etymology: < classical Latin Persicus Persian < Persae (see Perse n.1) or Persia (see Persian adj.) + -icus -ic suffix; compare ancient Greek Περσικός Persian, peach. In quot. 1585 at sense A. 1 after Middle French persique Persian (1564 as the name of a dance, 1576 in the passage translated; French persique ). Compare Italian persico Persian (15th cent.). With sense A. 2 compare Latin and Romance forms cited at peach n.1; in quots. 15991 at sense A. 2, 15992 at sense A. 2 after early modern German pfersichkern peach kernel, pfersichstein peach stone (both 1594 in the passage translated; German Pfirsichkern , Pfirsichstein ). Compare earlier Persian n. and adj.Compare Old English Persisc (adjective) Persian ( < Perse n.1 + -ish suffix1). With sense A. 2 compare Old English persoc peach (see peach n.1).
