Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin Pharisaicus.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin Pharisaicus (early 5th cent. in Jerome) < Byzantine Greek Φαρισαϊκός (5th cent.) < Hellenistic Greek Φαρισαῖος Pharisee n. + -ικός -ic suffix. Compare French pharisaïque (1531 or earlier in Middle French as pharisaique ), Italian farisaico (a1564 or earlier). Compare earlier Pharisaical adj., and also Pharisee-like adj.
1. Strict in matters of doctrine and ritual observance but lacking in charity or inner devotion; formalistic; laying great stress on external observance of religious and moral laws, and assuming superiority on that account; legalistic, self-righteous, hypocritical.
