释义

pharmaceuticn.adj.

Brit. /ˌfɑːməˈs(j)uːtɪk/, U.S. /ˌfɑrməˈsudɪk/
Forms: 1500s pharmaceutyke, 1600s– pharmaceutic.
Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from Latin. Party a borrowing from French. Etymons: Latin pharmaceuticus; French pharmaceutique.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin pharmaceuticus (adjective) of or relating to drugs or pharmacy (5th cent.; in classical Latin as a Greek word) < ancient Greek ϕαρμακευτικός < ϕαρμακευτής poisoner, sorcerer ( < ϕαρμακεύειν to administer a drug or medicine, to practise sorcery ( < ϕάρμακον poison, drug, medicine: see pharmaco- comb. form) + -της , suffix forming agent nouns; compare ancient Greek ϕαρμακεύς poisoner, sorcerer, in Hellenistic Greek also druggist, apothecary) + -ικός -ic suffix. In sense A. 1 via Middle French pharmaceutique (1537 in the passage translated in quot. ?1541 at sense A. 1; French pharmaceutique ); compare Hellenistic Greek ϕαρμακευτική , use as noun (short for ϕαρμακευτικὴ τέχνη ) of feminine of ancient Greek ϕαρμακευτικός . The adjective is not paralleled in French until later (1752), but compare Spanish farmaceutico (a1706), Portuguese farmacêutico (1691), Italian farmaceutico (1587), and also slightly earlier pharmaceutical adj.
