Origin: A borrowing from Latin, combined with an English element. Etymons: Latin Pharsālia , Pharsālius , -an suffix.
Etymology: < either classical Latin Pharsālia (see Pharsalia n.) or classical Latin Pharsālius (see Pharsalia n.) + -an suffix. Compare (with different suffix) Middle French pharsalicque (1546 (in Rabelais in bataille Pharsalicque) or earlier).
Originally: of, relating to, or designating the battle of Pharsalus in Thessaly (48 b.c.). Later also: of or relating to Pharsalia. Also in extended use.
