Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin phlyctaena.
Etymology: < classical Latin phlyctaena kind of pustule (Celsus) < ancient Greek ϕλύκταινα blister, pustule (Hippocrates) < an extended form (also seen in Byzantine Greek ϕλύζειν to boil over, bubble up) of the stem of ϕλύειν to boil over, bubble up ( < the same Indo-European base as classical Latin fluere to flow: see flue v.1) + -ταινα, suffix forming nouns. Compare Middle French, French phlyctène (1586).
Medicine.
A blister or vesicle of the skin or eye; spec. (Ophthalmology) a phlyctenule.
