Origin: A borrowing from Greek, combined with an English element; modelled on a Latin lexical item. Etymons: Greek ϕώκη , -odont comb. form.
Etymology: < ancient Greek ϕώκη seal (see phoca n.) + -odont comb. form, after scientific Latin Phocodontia, former division name (T. H. Huxley Man. Anat. Vertebrated Animals (1871) 411). Compare scientific Latin Phocodon, genus name (L. Agassiz in G. Valentin Repertorium für Anat. u. Physiol. VI. (1841) 236). N.E.D. (1906) gives the pronunciation as (fōu·kŏdǫnt) /ˈfəʊkədɒnt/.
Palaeontology. Obsolete. rare. Apparently only attested in dictionaries or glossaries.

An extinct whale of the former division Phocodontia, which comprised certain whales of the Tertiary period having teeth resembling those of seals.
