Origin: Either (i) a borrowing from French. Or (ii) a borrowing from Latin. Etymons: French acceptilation; Latin acceptilātiōn-, acceptilātiō.
Etymology: < (i) Middle French acceptilation release from a debt by an acquittance without payment (13th cent. in Old French), or its etymon (ii) classical Latin acceptilātiōn-, acceptilātiō formal verbal release from an obligation (2nd cent. a.d. in legal context), properly acceptī lātiō < acceptī , genitive of acceptum receipts as opposed to expenditure, receipt side of an account, written receipt, use as noun of neuter past participle of accipere (see accept v.) + lātiō lation n.
Chiefly Roman Law.
Release from a debt by an acquittance without payment; an instance of this. Formerly also figurative: †free remission of sins (obsolete).
