单词 petty perny
释义

petty pernyn.

Forms:

α. late Middle English pety peruaunt, late Middle English pety perueis (plural), late Middle English pety perueys (plural), 1500s pety peruy.

β. late Middle English peti pernant, late Middle English pety pernaunt, late Middle English pety perneux (plural), late Middle English pety pernollys (plural).

Origin: Apparently formed within English, by compounding. Etymons: petty adj., an element of unknown origin.
Etymology: < petty adj. + a second element of unknown origin. The α. forms are usually regarded as transmission errors (even though they are attested earliest); however, as the origin of the second element is unknown, it is debatable whether forms in -n- or forms in -u- are primary. Several etymologies have been tentatively suggested for the second element: perhaps < an unattested diminutive of Anglo-Norman and Middle French perne ham (late 13th cent.; < classical Latin perna thigh, ham: see pernio n.), so called either from the shape or from the ingredients (compare French regional (Aveyron) pèrno slice of fruit, (Dauphiné) parno dried pitted plum or peach); or perhaps < Anglo-Norman pernaunt , variant of Middle French prenant , present participle of prendre to take (see prender n.), although if so the semantic development is unclear. Less likely are suggested derivations from an unattested diminutive of Anglo-Norman pain , pan bread (see pain n.2, and compare pain puff n. at pain n.2 Compounds); or, if the α. forms are considered primary, from an alteration of provant n. (although this is first attested later).
Obsolete.
A small rich pastry filled with a mixture of dried fruit and spices.
