Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French peveré.
Etymology: < Anglo-Norman peveré, pevree (late 12th cent.; compare Old French pevree ; use as noun of past participle of pevrer pepper v.), with ending remodelled after -ade suffix. Compare post-classical Latin piperata (c1180, a1250 in British sources; also as perperata), Old Occitan pebrada (12th cent.; Occitan pebrada), Catalan pebrada (1310), Spanish pebrada (1509).In France, Old French pevree was later replaced by Middle French, French poivrade (see poivrade n.) The phrase en peverade is also attested in Middle English:a1450 in T. Austin Two 15th-cent. Cookery-bks. (1888) 11 Brawn en Peuerade.
