Etymology: < Middle French pertourber, perturber, parturber to throw into confusion, to disrupt (c1200 in Old French as parturber ; French perturber ) and its etymon classical Latin perturbāre to throw into confusion, to disrupt, derange, to trouble, upset, agitate < per- per- prefix + turbāre to disturb, confuse (see turbation n.). Compare Old Occitan perturbar (13th cent.; Occitan perturbar), pertorbar (14th cent.), Catalan pertorbar (1472); Spanish perturbar (14th cent.), Italian perturbare (1268).
