Origin: Either (i) a borrowing from Latin. Or (ii) a borrowing from Greek. Etymons: Latin phasma; Greek ϕάσμα.
Etymology: < classical Latin phasma spectre, apparition (later adopted as genus name: see sense 2) or its etymon ancient Greek ϕάσμα spectre, apparition, phantom < ϕα- , ablaut variant of the stem of ϕαίνειν to show, to cause to appear (see -phane comb. form) + -σμα , extended form of -μα (see -oma comb. form). With sense 2 compare French Phasme (1801).
