Origin: Either (i) a borrowing from Latin. Or (ii) a borrowing from Greek. Etymons: Latin philargyria; Greek ϕιλαργυρία.
Etymology: < classical Latin philargyria (5th cent.) or its etymon ancient Greek ϕιλαργυρία love of money, avarice < ϕιλάργυρος fond of money ( < ϕιλο- philo- comb. form + ἄργυρος silver, money (see argyro- comb. form); > classical Latin philargyros , in an 8th-cent. epitome of a 2nd-cent. grammarian) + -ία -y suffix3. N.E.D. (1906) indicates the stress as phiˈlargyry.
Obsolete.
Love of money; avarice, covetousness.In quot. 1565 personified.
