Etymology: < post-classical Latin philobiblicus (1687 or earlier in the name of the Collegium Philobiblicum ; < philo- philo- comb. form + biblicus relating to the Bible: see biblic adj.) + -al suffix¹. Compare later biblical adj.The Collegium Philobiblicum was founded in Leipzig in Germany in 1686 by a group of theologians and philologists including August Hermann Francke (1663–1727), who later became a leading figure in the Halle Pietist movement (compare quot. 1705).
