With sense 2 compare slightly earlier perulate adj.According to A. P. de Candolle Théorie élémentaire de botanique (ed. 2, 1819) 395, L. C. M. Richard used both French pérule and scientific Latin perula to denote the mentum of an orchid flower (compare sense 3).
