Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from French. Partly a borrowing from Latin. Etymons: French pérule; Latin perula.
Etymology: < French pérule scaly covering of a leaf-bud (C. F. Brisseau de Mirbel Élémens de physiol. végétale et de bot. (1815) I. 139) and its etymon scientific Latin perula (Mirbel, in the same source, II. 635) < classical Latin pēra ( < ancient Greek πήρα leather bag, wallet: see peridium n.) + -ula -ula suffix. With sense 2 compare slightly earlier perulate adj.According to A. P. de Candolle Théorie élémentaire de botanique (ed. 2, 1819) 395, L. C. M. Richard used both French pérule and scientific Latin perula to denote the mentum of an orchid flower (compare sense 3).
Botany.
1. The covering of a seed. Obsolete. rare.Perhaps a misinterpretation of Mirbel's usage (sense 2).Apparently only attested in dictionaries or glossaries.
