Origin: A borrowing from Spanish. Etymon: Spanish peseta.

In later use: the former standard monetary unit of Spain, equal to 100 céntimos; a coin or banknote of this value. The peseta was a provincial coin from the mid 18th cent., and became the standard currency of Spain in 1868. It was replaced by the euro (Euro n.2 1a) in January 1999 and ceased to be legal tender in Spain in 2002 with the introduction of the euro coins and banknotes.
