Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin Phacelia.

Etymology: < scientific Latin Phacelia, genus name (A. L. Jussieu Genera Plantarum (1789) 129) < ancient Greek ϕάκελος bundle (see note), with reference to the clustered flowers + scientific Latin -ia -ia suffix¹.It has been suggested that ancient Greek ϕάκελος bundle and σϕάκελος middle finger were originally variants of the same word, < the same Indo-European base as classical Latin fascis (see fasces n.).

Any of numerous annual plants of the genus Phacelia (family Hydrophyllaceae), mostly native to south-west North America, bearing blue, violet, or white flowers (frequently arranged in scorpioid cymes), and including some grown as ornamentals, esp. the Californian P. tanacetifolia. Also (in form Phacelia): the genus itself.
