Origin: A borrowing from Latin, combined with an English element; modelled on a Latin lexical item. Etymons: Latin phacop- , Phacops , -id suffix3.
Etymology: < scientific Latin phacop-, taken as stem of Phacops, genus name (H. F. Emmrich De Trilobitis (1839) 16; < ancient Greek ϕακός lens (see phaco- comb. form) + ὤψ face, eye: see -ops comb. form) + -id suffix3, after Phacopidae, family name (1916 or earlier; earlier Phacopides (I. Hawle & A. J. C. Corda 1848, in Abhandl. der Königl. Böhmischen Ges. der Wissensch. 5 ii. 127)).

Of or relating to the family Phacopidae of trilobites, the members of which had large compound eyes and a rounded glabella which widened frontwards.
