单词 phaeacian
释义

Phaeaciann.adj.

Brit. /fiːˈeɪʃn/, U.S. /fiˈeɪʃ(ə)n/
Forms: 1600s Pheacian, 1600s– Phaeacian.
Origin: A borrowing from Latin, combined with an English element. Etymons: Latin Phaeācius , -an suffix.
Etymology: < classical Latin Phaeācius of or belonging to Phaeacia ( < Phaeācia (Hellenistic Greek Φαιακία), another name for the mythological island of Scheria, popularly identified in ancient and modern times with ancient Corcyra (now Corfu), although this identification has been disputed) + -an suffix. Compare classical Latin Phaeāx (ancient Greek Φαίαξ) an inhabitant of Phaeacia, also a hedonist, gourmand (Horace).
In or with allusion to Homer's Odyssey: an inhabitant of ancient Scheria (now Corfu), whose people were noted for their hedonism. Hence in extended use: a hedonist, a gourmand. Also as adj.
