Origin: A borrowing from Greek, combined with an English element. Etymons: Greek ϕαιός , -ism suffix.
Etymology: < ancient Greek ϕαιός dusky, brownish, grey, in Hellenistic Greek also dark-complexioned (probably < the same base as ϕαιδρός bright, ϕαικός bright, of uncertain origin) + -ism suffix.
Entomology. rare. Now disused.
Slight darkness or duskiness of colour, distinguished from melanism as being a less dark coloration.

1891 Athenæum 12 Dec. 804/3 Mr. Jenner-Weir exhibited two dark specimens of Zygæna minos..[he] expressed an opinion that the specimens were not representatives of complete melanism, and suggested that the word ‘phæism’..would be a correct word to apply to this and similar departures from the normal coloration of a species.
1907 Amer. Naturalist 41 778 If there were need of coining new words, we might call the pink individuals cases of rhodism and the brown ones cases of phaeism.
