1863 G. Busk in Trans. Anthropol. Soc. London p. xii, in Anthropol. Rev. 1 In certain crania, viewed on the vertical aspect, the zygomatic arches can be seen projecting more or less on the sides, whilst in others these processes are wholly concealed. For the former condition I venture to propose the term ‘phænozygous’, and for the latter ‘aphænozygous’.
1878 R. T. H. Bartley tr. P. Topinard Anthropol. ii. iii. 288 When the [parietal] angle is positive, the zygomatic arches are called phenozygous [Fr. phénozyges]—that is to say, visible by the norma verticalis method of Blumenbach.
1902 Amer. Anthropologist 4 474 The crania are prognathous, platyrhine, platyopic, phenozygous, and megadont.
1936 Biometrika 28 132 It appears that this index is capable of differentiating some ‘primitive,’ phaenozygous races from the rest.
