Origin: Formed within English, by compounding; modelled on a German lexical item. Etymons: phaeochrome adj., -o- connective, -cyte comb. form.
Etymology: < phaeochrome adj. + -o- connective + -cyte comb. form, after German Phäochromocyte (H. Poll 1906, in O. Hertwig Handb. d. vergleichenden u. experimentellen Entwickelungslehre d. Wirbeltiere III. 460; now usually Phäochromozyt).
Histology. Now rare.
A chromaffin cell, esp. of the adrenal medulla.
