Etymology: < French philotechnique (1795 in the name of the Société Philotechnique : compare quot. 1804; now rare) < ancient Greek ϕιλοτεχνία love of art, craftsmanship ( < ϕιλότεχνος fond of art ( < ϕιλο- philo- comb. form + τέχνη art: see techno- comb. form) + -ία -ia suffix¹) + French -ique -ic suffix. Compare French philotechnie (1547 in Middle French, subsequently from 1806, now rare), and also †philotechne artist, lover of arts (see philotechnist n.). Compare slightly earlier philotechnical adj. and slightly later philotechnist n.
