Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin Phlebenterata.
Etymology: < scientific Latin Phlebenterata, former division name (A. de Quatrefages in Ann. des sci. naturelles 1 (1844) 169; compare French Phlébentérés in the same source) < ancient Greek ϕλεβ- , ϕλέψ vein (see phlebo- comb. form) + ἔντερον enteron n. + scientific Latin -ata (see -ate suffix2). N.E.D. (1906) gives the pronunciation as (flĭbe·ntĕrĕt) /flɪˈbɛntərət/.

Of or relating to the former division Phlebenterata of gastropod molluscs, characterized by caeca extending from the alimentary canal which were formerly believed to be involved in circulating the blood.
