Forms: Before a vowel phleb-
Origin: Either (i) a borrowing from Latin. Or (ii) a borrowing from Greek. Etymons: Latin phlebo-; Greek ϕλεβο-.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin phlebo- (in e.g. phlebotomia phlebotomy n.) or its etymon ancient Greek ϕλεβο- (in e.g. ϕλεβοτομία phlebotomy n.), combining form of ϕλεβ- , ϕλέψ blood vessel, vein, of uncertain origin, perhaps < an ablaut variant of the base of ϕαλλός penis (see phallos n.). Compare French phlébo- (formations in which are found from at least the end of the 18th cent.), German phlebo- (formations in which are found from at least the late 19th cent.).Earliest attested in the Middle English period in the Middle French loanword phlebotomy n. Formations in English are found from the first half of the 19th cent. onwards. Usually combined with second elements ultimately of Greek origin.
