A congenital malformation in which the long bones of one or more limbs are absent or rudimentary, resulting in the hand or foot being attached close to the trunk.Phocomelia normally occurs as a rare and sporadic malformation, but a large number of cases resulted from the administration of thalidomide to pregnant women around 1960.
