单词 pholidote
释义

pholidoteadj.n.

Brit. /ˈfɒlᵻdəʊt/, U.S. /ˈfɑləˌdoʊt/
Origin: A borrowing from Greek. Etymon: Greek ϕολιδωτός.
Etymology: < ancient Greek ϕολιδωτός covered with scales < Hellenistic Greek ϕολιδοῦσθαι to be covered in scales, although this is apparently first attested later ( < ancient Greek ϕολιδ-, ϕολίς scale, perhaps < the same Indo-European base as Russian bolona growth on trees, bolon′ soft bark, Czech blána skin) + -τός, suffix forming verbal adjectives. In later use after scientific Latin Pholidota, order name (M. Weber Säugetiere (1904) 412). Compare also scientific Latin Pholidotus, formerly proposed as a genus name for the pangolins (M. J. Brisson Regnum Animale (1762) 18), French pholidote covered with scales (1868 in Littré).
