Etymology: < ancient Greek ϕωνή voice (see -phone comb. form) + εἶδος form, figure (see eidos n.) + -scope comb. form. Compare kaleidoscope n.
Now historical and rare.
An instrument for observing the vibrations of a thin film of soap solution in response to sound waves.

1893 Athenæum 4 Feb. 159/1 Prof. Sedley Taylor..produced an instrument he unhappily named the ‘Phoneidoscope’, which was contrived to exhibit the ‘crispations’ of a soap film set in vibration by a vocal sound.
1937 J. J. Thomson Recoll. & Refl. x. 319 Sedley Taylor..invented an instrument called a phoneidoscope, in which soap films showed beautifully coloured patterns when musical notes fell upon them.
