Origin: A borrowing from German. Etymon: German Physharmonica.
Etymology: < German †Physharmonica (1830 or earlier; now Physharmonika ) < ancient Greek ϕῦσα bellows (see physa n.) + German †Harmonica (now Harmonika ) harmonica n. Compare French physharmonica (1831 or earlier).
Music. Now historical.
An early form of harmonium, in which metal springs are set in vibration by a current of air. Also: a kind of reed stop on the organ, imitating the tone of this.This form of harmonium was invented by Anton Häckl of Vienna c1820, and was originally designed to be attached to a piano.
