Origin: A borrowing from Greek, combined with an English element. Etymons: phono- comb. form, Greek πόρος.
Etymology: < phono- comb. form + ancient Greek πόρος passage (see pore n.1); compare quot. 1891. Compare slightly later phonophore n.
Telephony. Now historical.
An apparatus incorporating two insulated wires wound together so as to combine features of a capacitor and an induction coil, by means of which a telephone or telegraph circuit could be superimposed on an active circuit without interfering with the current carrying the original transmission.
