Etymology: < phos- comb. form + -gen comb. form (see quot. 1812). Compare German Phosgen (1820 in the compound Phosgenspath : see phosgenite n.; < English), French phosgène (1823; < English).
Chemistry.
A colourless poisonous gas, made by the reaction of chlorine and carbon monoxide in the presence of light or a catalyst, which has been used in chemical warfare (notably in the First World War (1914–18)) and as a reagent in chemical synthesis; carbonyl chloride, COCl2. Also phosgene gas.
