Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French phosphite.
Etymology: < French phosphite (L. B. Guyton de Morveau Nomencl. chim. (1787) 49) < phospho- phospho- comb. form + -ite -ite suffix1. Compare Italian fosfito (1792).
Chemistry.
A salt or ester of phosphorous acid (phosphonic acid, HPO(OH)2); a phosphonate.
