Origin: Formed within English, by compounding. Etymons: physio- comb. form1, -cracy comb. form.
Etymology: < physio- comb. form1 + -cracy comb. form. In sense 1 after German Physiocratie (1794 in the passage translated in quot. 1838 at sense 1); in sense 2 after French physiocratie (1768: see note). Compare Italian fisocrazia (1803 in sense 2). Compare earlier physiocrat n., physiocratic adj., physiocratical adj.In sense 2, the term was coined by Pierre-Samuel Du Pont de Nemours (1739–1817), French political economist, in the title of his collection of the writings of François Quesnay (1694–1774), French physician and economist:1768 P. S. Du Pont (title) Physiocratie, ou constitution naturelle du gouvernement les plus avantageux au genre humain.
