Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French physiocrate.
Etymology: < French physiocrate (1768; compare physiocracy n.) < physio- physio- comb. form1 + -crate -crat comb. form, after physiocratie physiocracy n. Compare earlier physiocratical adj.The group was also known as économistes (compare quot. 1804 and economist n. 3b).
Political Economy. Now historical.
A member of a school of political economists founded by François Quesnay in France in the 18th cent.; = economist n. 3b.The physiocrats maintained primarily that society should be governed according to an inherent natural order, that the soil is the sole source of wealth and the only proper object of taxation, and that security of property and freedom of industry and exchange are essential.
