Compare French physiognomonique relating to physiognomy (1721; 1806–7 spec. relating to modern physiognomic theories). Compare earlier physiognomonical adj. N.E.D. (1906) gives the pronunciation as (fiziǫ:gnomǫ·nik) /fɪzɪˌɒɡnəʊˈmɒnɪk/.
