Origin: Either (i) a borrowing from Spanish. Or (ii) a borrowing from Portuguese. Etymons: Spanish pico; Portuguese pico.
Etymology: < Spanish pico (1085) or Portuguese pico (1427), both < the same Romance base as Spanish pico pickaxe (see pike n.1); compare post-classical Latin picum (977 in a Spanish source), Old Occitan, Occitan pic (c1350 in a source from the Pyrenees), and also Catalan pica (1309), all in sense ‘peak, summit’. French pico (1665–6 in the passage translated in quot. 1687 at peak n.2 7a) is < Spanish. Compare earlier pike n.5, and also pic n.2, peak n.2A parallel sense development to the one observed in Ibero-Romance from ‘point, pointed object’ to ‘peak, summit’ occurred independently in related words in other languages, compare Norwegian regional pik pike n.2
A peak or mountain; the conical or pointed summit of a mountain. Cf. pic n.2Chiefly in proper names of mountains of conical form, esp. the Pico de Teide on Tenerife (cf. pike n.5).
