Origin: A borrowing from Spanish. Etymon: Spanish picón.
Etymology: < Spanish picón taunting (early 17th cent.) < picar to taunt, goad, annoy (see pick v.1); perhaps influenced by picante picante adj., and (especially in pronunciation) French piquant piquant adj.
Caribbean (chiefly Trinidad).
Ritualized (and usually competitive) verbal ridicule, insult, or teasing; spec. the exchange of improvised rhyming repartee in calypso singing; esp. in to give (a person) picong. Also more generally: irreverent humour, mockery.
