Origin: Formed within English, by compounding. Etymons: pico- comb. form, RNA n., virus n.
Etymology: < pico- comb. form + RNA n. (here treated as though an acronym rather than an initialism) + virus n. (see quot. 1962).
Virology.
Any member of the family Picornaviridae of very small, non-enveloped, single-stranded RNA viruses which are pathogens of mammals and birds, and include the enteroviruses, rhinoviruses, foot-and-mouth disease virus, and hepatitis A virus.The family Picornaviridae includes the genera Enterovirus, Rhinovirus, Aphthovirus (foot-and-mouth disease virus, etc.), Hepatovirus (hepatitis A virus), Cardiovirus (encephalomyocarditis virus, etc.), and Parechovirus (human parechoviruses, which cause diarrhoea and respiratory symptoms, esp. in children).
