Etymology: < French picotite (J. de Charpentier 1812, in Jrnl. des mines 32 320) < the name of Picot , Baron de la Peyrouse (1744–1818), French naturalist, who described the mineral + -ite -ite suffix¹.It is unclear whether the form picolite (in quot. 1814) is deliberate.

Mineralogy.

A black mineral of the spinel group that is an oxide of ferrous iron and chromium and belongs to the cubic crystal system.
