Origin: A borrowing from German. Etymon: German Phosphophyllit.

Etymology: < German Phosphophyllit (H. Laubmann & H. Steinmetz 1920, in Zeitschr. f. Krystallogr. u. Min. 55 566) < phospho- phospho- comb. form + ancient Greek ϕύλλον leaf (see phyllo- comb. form) + German -it -ite suffix¹, so called in allusion to the mineral's perfect cleavage.

Mineralogy.

A mineral of the monoclinic crystal system that is a hydrated phosphate of zinc and iron (often partly replaced by manganese), Zn₂Fe(PO₄)₂.4H₂O, and occurs as colourless to bluish-green, glassy, tabular crystals.
