Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin physis.
Etymology: < classical Latin physis nature < ancient Greek ϕύσις nature (in various senses), in Hellenistic Greek also personified < ϕύειν to produce ( < the Indo-European base of be v.) + -σις -sis suffix.
Chiefly Philosophy.
In early use: †Nature personified (cf. nature n. 10a) (obsolete). Later: nature in various philosophical contexts; esp. the inherent quality of a being or object (cf. nature n. 9a).
