Origin: A borrowing from German. Etymon: German Physostigmin.
Etymology: < German Physostigmin (J. Jobst & O. Hesse 1864, in Ann. d. Chem. u. Pharm. 129 118) < scientific Latin Physostigma (see Physostigma n.) + German -in -ine suffix5.
Chemistry and Pharmacology.
A tricyclic alkaloid, C15H21N3O2, originally found in the calabar bean (the seed of Physostigma venenosum), which is used medically as a cholinesterase inhibitor, chiefly in the treatment of glaucoma. Also called eserine.
