Origin: A borrowing from Greek, combined with English elements; modelled on a Latin lexical item. Etymons: physo- comb. form, Greek στόμα , -ous suffix.
Etymology: < physo- comb. form + ancient Greek στόμα mouth (see stoma n.) + -ous suffix, after scientific Latin Physostomi (see physostome adj. and n.). Compare slightly later physoclistous adj.
Ichthyology.
Of, relating to, or designating a teleost fish in which there is an opening between the swim-bladder and the gut. Cf. physoclistous adj.
