Etymology: < phyto- comb. form + -lith comb. form. Compare French phytolithe fossil plant (1835). In sense 2 probably after German Phytolitharien, plural (Ehrenberg 1845; also in Latinate form Phytolitharia ). With sense 1 compare earlier phytolithus n. and phytolite n.Compare use of the form phytolitharia (plural), apparently in both senses 1 and 2:1847 Amer. Jrnl. Sci. 54 423 The microscopic analysis of this dust produced 22 polygastrica, 21 phytolitharia, together with the pollen of plants.1848 Q. Jrnl. Geol. Soc. 4 ii. 22 There is found in each portion [of dust] as large as a pin-head..a trace of distinctly organized matter in the form of small siliceous shells of animals or fragments of plants (Phytolitharia).
