A lethal disease of grapevines caused by the bacterium Xylella fastidiosa, which infects the xylem, causing progressive wilting and desiccation of the leaves and other plant parts.The disease, spread by certain species of leafhopper, esp. sharpshooters, occurs in North and Central America.Formerly called California vine disease, Anaheim disease. Gardening Sept. 27/3 Pierce's disease is caused by bacteria and spread by leafhoppers, particularly the glassy-winged sharpshooter.
