Epinasty supposed to occur as a result of exposure to bright light. Cf. photo-hyponasty n.

1883 Science 9 Feb. 20/2 Detmer, by experiments on germinating plants, has become convinced that the epinastic movements of plants are wholly dependent on light; and he proposes a new term, photo-epinasty, in part place of the older one.
1883 Bull. Torrey Bot. Club 10 84 W. Detmer proposes the term ‘photepinasty’ for the epinastic position of leaves induced by light.
1896 Science 25 Sept. 430/1 The conclusion of Vines that photo-epinasty does not exist is confirmed.
