Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin Photoblepharon.
Etymology: < scientific Latin Photoblepharon, genus name (M. Weber Siboga Expeditie (1902) I. 108) < photo- photo- comb. form + ancient Greek βλέϕαρον eyelid (see blepharo- comb. form).
Zoology.
Either of two small tropical fishes of the genus Photoblepharon (family Anomalopidae), having a luminous organ below each eye and living around reefs from East Africa and the Red Sea to the western Pacific (also called flashlight fish); (also) the genus itself.
