An animal which feeds on plants or plant material; spec. a member of any of various animal groups called Phytophaga (in quot. 1883: one comprising herbivorous marsupial mammals).The name Phytophaga has at various times been given to: (a) a suborder of hymenopteran insects including the sawflies and horntails (now called Symphyta); (b) a suborder of edentate mammals comprising the sloths (now called Phyllophaga); (c) a major division of beetles including longhorn beetles and leaf beetles (still current); (d) a group of cyprinoid fishes; (e) other groups of insects or mammals characterized as plant-eating.
