Etymology: < scientific Latin Phytophthora, genus name (see quot. 1876¹ at main sense) < phyto- phyto- comb. form + ancient Greek ϕθορά destruction (see phthore n.).

A genus of oomycete fungi (order Peronosporales) including many plant pathogens, typically causing root, collar, and fruit rots; (also phytophthora) a fungus of this genus, esp. Phytophthora infestans, the cause of potato blight.
